Ground System Engineer

CLC Space is currently recruiting a Ground System Engineer to provide consultancy support at their client’s headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany.

JOB DESCRIPTION

To provide system engineering consultancy support to the development and qualification of the MTG ground segment. The consultancy position will be in EUMETSAT's TSS department.
The tasks will be carried out at EUMETSAT facilities in Darmstadt, but travel within Europe may be required for certain activities.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To provide support for ground segment-related activities for the phase C/D of the MTG programme. The phase C/D has started since the completion of the ground segment Preliminary Design Review (May 2012) and is completing at the Qualification Review (presently planned mid-2020).
The duties range from specification, analysis, design, build, deployment and subsequent verification. The activities for this consultancy relate to the ground segment, consisting of the data acquisition systems, monitoring and control systems, data processing and archiving facilities, product dissemination facilities and the encompassing network elements.

You will perform typical system engineering activities such as:
• Requirements engineering, which consists in requirement analysis and validation, requirement allocation, and requirement maintenance;
• System analysis, which is performed for the purpose of resolving requirements conflicts, decomposing and allocating requirements, assessing system effectiveness;
• Performance of trade studies for assessing effectiveness, risk, cost and planning;
• Design, build and configuration which results in a physical architecture, described by its complete functional, physical and software characteristics;
• Integration and verification, which final objective is to demonstrate that the deliverables conform to the specified requirements.

General support to ground segment detailed definition, production and qualification phases, including:
• Support to the completion of the detailed design of the ground segment system, including analyses (architectural trade-offs, system technical budgets, RAMS, FMECA) to ensure completeness and coherence of the design for all aspects related to system engineering.
• Support to the preparation and follow up of external studies;
• Support to the performance of elements design for internally developed elements;
• Support to the review of all externally procured elements designs;
• Support to finalisation and subsequent maintenance of the ground segment internal interfaces definition;
• Support to finalisation and subsequent maintenance of the ground segment system level design;
• Support to element level activities;
• Support to the ground segment system and constituent parts assembly, integration and verification;
• Participation in reviews and meetings at system, ground segment system and element level;
• Support to the preparation and maintenance of schedule, resource allocations and Work Breakdown Structures for system engineering activities.

YOUR PROFILE

Hard skills, experience & knowledge

MANDATORY SKILLS:
You shall have the following experience and background:
• University degree or equivalent in the domain of engineering or science;
• At least 5 years of experience in the field of engineering of space-related ground systems, including good experience in any two of : (
i) Networking & Communications,
ii) Ground Stations,
iii) Near Real-Time Data Processing,
iv) Monitoring and control of satellites,
v) Monitoring and control of ground systems;
and an overview of the other three items;
• Experience in system-level analyses from an end-to-end perspective, understanding relevant details while keeping the focus on the overall system aspects and presenting the results in a comprehensible way;
• Experience in preparation of system design documentation;
• Experience in the integration and verification of such systems.

DESIRABLE (BUT NOT MANDATORY) ADDITIONAL SKILLS:

The following experience would represent additional assets:
• Experience in data archive & retrieval and data dissemination systems;
• Experience in management and traceability of complex requirements structure: experience with DOORS;
• Experience in the use of modelling and design tools in support of architectural design activities (e.g. Enterprise Architect);
• Experience in software engineering;
• Experience in configuration Control processes;
• Knowledge of ECSS standards.

You shall be able to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision, have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan your work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. You shall have the capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. Good communication skills (verbal and written) are important. You shall be willing to work in a team of engineers and in cooperation with industry and partner agencies.

The official languages are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore you shall be able to work effectively in this language.
The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills.
