Mission Control System Software Engineer

CLC Space is currently recruiting a Mission Control System Software Engineer to provide consultancy support at their client’s headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany.

JOB DESCRIPTION
To provide for engineering consultancy for the requirements specification, architectural design, implementation, integration, verification and maintenance of the Mission Control System of a Ground Segment. The work will mainly cover EUMETSAT Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Programmes.
The tasks will be carried out at EUMETSA T facilities in Darmstadt, but travel overseas and/or within Europe may be required for certain activities.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To provide consultancy to the Mission Control Applications and Tools Team within the GSI Division in the TSS Department.
The Mission Control Applications (MCA) and Tools Team is responsible for the maintenance and development of the following Mission Control Applications:

• Spacecraft Monitoring & Control,
• Local Applications Monitoring & Control,
• On-board software management,
• Flight Dynamics System,
• Mission Planning System,
• OpsPrep Tools,
• Data analysis and reporting tools,
• Spacecraft Simulator

The Mission Control Applications and Tools Team performs the following activities:
• Software engineering and software maintenance of multi-mission and mission-specific Mission Control Applications and Tools for GEO and LEO missions.
• Software engineering for the reuse of Mission Control Applications and Tools with the separation between generic kernel and mission-specific extensions.
• Integration and verification at application and system level.
• User and software support to flight control teams.
• Support to the EUMETSAT Programme Preparation and Development (PRD) Department
for the Phase-B/C/D of new missions in the domain ofMission Control Applications.
will provide its prime consultancy to the Mission Control

Applications and Tools Team in the following areas:
• evolution and maintenance of the EUMETSAT Mission Control System for the EPS
mission;

• technical coordination in the team of the different parallel activities involving the EPS
Mission Control Applications and Tools (EPS MCF);

• evolution, maintenance and adaption and deployment for new EUMETSAT Programmes of
Multi-Mission Satellite & Ground Station Online Monitoring Applications and Operation
Preparation (OpsPrep) Tools.

The tasks will typically include:

• Maintenance and Evolution Activities

o Reengineering activities: analysis of the porting of some subsystems to state-of-the-art
technologies, trade-off studies of various technologies, software design of the technical
solutions, following the procurement of the changes with external contractors and
verification testing of the changes.

o Evolutions and changes: generation and/or analysis of user-driven and maintenance-
driven software requirements, software design of the technical solutions, following the
procurement of the changes with external contractors and verification testing of the
changes.

o Preventive and corrective maintenance: including the investigation and correction (or
following the corrections implemented by external contractors) of anomalies in the
software applications and verification testing of the fixes.

o Maintenance test procedures: generation and updates of maintenance test procedures at
software application level and at system level.

o Consultancy and development of the verification infrastructure: development and/or
procurement of scripts I tools to perform installation checks, non-regression, functional
and performance testing. Analysis and implementation of mechanisms or tools allowing
the automatic or semi-automatic verification testing of the application software.

o Coordination of the production of new software releases or patches, delivery acceptance
and installation on-site. This activity includes the technical coordination of the production
by an external contractor of new releases or patches of the application software, liaison
with the EUMETSA T operational users, participation in technical reviews, participation
in factory (at contractor premises) acceptance testing campaigns and coordination of the
installation of the releases or patches on-site at EUMETSAT.

o Execution and coordination of software verification and non-regression testing campaigns.

o This activity includes preparation of test data, running the test procedures on the target system,
generation of test reports, analysis of results and troubleshooting of problems.

o Software consultancy: software consultancy to the end-users of the application software.

o Ensure operations continuity: by provision of on-call services and software consultancy to
operations.

o Documentation: generation and updates of technical documents.

o Technical point of contact for maintenance contractors: acting as point of contact with the
contractor for technical discussions, review of technical documentation from the contractor
from the technical point of view, organizing periodical technical meetings with the
contractor.

• Consultancy to the technical coordination of the parallel activities involving the EPS
Mission Control Applications and Tools (EPS MCF)

o Consultancy to the technical coordination of all the parallel maintenance and evolution
activities where the EPS MCF applications and tools are involved.

o Participation in the Operations planning and scheduling meetings and anomaly review
boards where the EPS MCF applications and tools are discussed.

• Consultancy to new Programmes for the adaption and deployment of the EUMETSAT
Multi-Mission Satellite & Ground Station Online Monitoring Applications and OpsPrep Tools

o Consultancy for the requirements and/or service definition phase for these Multi-Mission
Applications and Tools including the technical interaction with user or ground segment
representatives of new EUMETSAT Programmes.

o Consultancy for the architectural design phase including the specification and design of the
infrastructure required for the provision of these Multi-Mission Applications and Tools to
new Programmes.

o Consultancy for the implementation phase for both external activities performed by the
software contractor and configuration tasks performed internally.

o Consultancy for the deployment of these Multi-Mission Applications and Tools for new
Programmes.

o Consultancy for the verification and integration testing of these Multi-Mission
Applications and Tools.

YOUR PROFILE
In addition to having a University degree in a relevant engineering discipline, you shall demonstrate significant knowledge and experience in the area of specification, design, implementation, verification and maintenance of Mission Control Systems. You shall have skills and experience in the following mandatory areas:

1. Domain Skills
o Experience (minimum 5 years) in the definition of software requirements, architectural design, implementation and maintenance of Mission Control Systems in the context of
Low Earth Orbit (LEO) space missions.
o Experience in the maintenance and evolution of Mission Control Systems based on the EPOCH IPS M&C Product Suite from KRATOS Integral Systems.

2. Software Development, Verification & Maintenance Skills
o Experience (minimum 5 years) in the full cycle of development and maintenance of
application software, preferably for Mission Control Systems, following formal software
engineering processes. This includes user and system requirement analysis, software
requirement engineering, software design, implementation, corrective and evolutive
maintenance activities.

o Experience (minimum 5 years) in IV &V (integration, verification and validation) activities, preferably for Mission Control Systems, following formal engineering processes. This includes requirement verification, system and subsystem integration, generation of test plan and test procedures, non-regression testing, generation of test data, generation of test tools, running the test procedures on the target system, generation of test reports and anomaly tracking.

3. Software Technologies Skills
o Experience (minimum 3 years) in designing and developing software applications using C++ and Java programming languages for UNIX/Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
It would be a distinct advantage for you to have knowledge and/or experience with some of the following:
4. Domain Skills
o Knowledge and understanding of space related standards (ECSS and CCSDS) concerning space-to-ground interfaces and applicable to Satellite Mission Control Systems.
o Experience in the development and maintenance of Mission Control Systems based on MICONYS® software suite from ESAIESOC.
o Experience in deploying and configuring the OpsPrep MOIS Tool from RHEA.
o Experience in integration of Mission Control Systems with Flight Dynamics Systems.
o Experience in integration of Mission Control Systems with Mission Planning Systems.
o Experience in using spacecraft simulators for Mission Control Systems testing.
o Experience in software support to flight control operations teams for Mission Control Systems.
5. Maintenance Technical Management Skills
o Experience in being the technical point of contact for contractors working at off-site premises and responsible for application software evolution and maintenance.

6. Software Technologies Skills
o Experience in using IBM Rational DOORS as system and software requirement management tool.
o Experience in the usage of software CASE design tools (e.g. "Enterprise Architect" and/or
"MagicDraw").
o Experience in using Unified Modelling Language (UML) for software design.
o XML processing: schema design, validation, parser libraries, transformation (XSL T) and XPath.
o Experience in designing and developing software applications using interfaces to relational
database management systems (RDBMS) and experience with data model design for RDBMS.
o Experience in designing, developing and maintaining software client applications using
Eclipse as HMI framework (Rich Client Platform).
o Experience using tools for the automation of software testing.

The official languages are English and French. The working language for the position is English and therefore you shall be able to work effectively in this language.
