Data Processing Engineer

CLC Space is currently recruiting a Data Processing Engineer to provide consultancy support at their client’s headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany.

JOB DESCRIPTION

To provide consultancy support within the Data Processing Systems and Applications Competence Area of the SEP Division to assist in the procurement, integration, testing and transfer to operations of Data Processing elements of future programmes under development. Support is envisaged in the context of EPS-SG but the key person may be also assigned to similar tasks in the context of other programmes.
The tasks of the key person will be carried out mainly at our client’s facilities in Darmstadt, but travel within Europe, or even worldwide might be required for some tasks.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

You shall provide engineering support to follow-up the industrial procurement, testing and verification of the payload data processing component of the EPS-SG Ground Segment. You will primarily focus on the data processing infrastructure and framework applications responsible for orchestrating and monitoring the data processing for different instruments.

The processing infrastructure typically includes the following elements:
• Framework applications controlling the logic for data ingestion, handling, processing and distribution to external entities;
• Resource management to optimise allocation of computing resources;
• Monitoring & control applications (including displays for interacting with the system);
• High-performance data access and storage (e.g. SAN, distributed file systems);
• High-performance communication networks. In the detail, support will be provided for the following tasks:
• Provide technical support to the development of the EPS-SG data processing infrastructure and framework applications;
• Advise on the design and feasibility of technical solutions proposed by Industry (including assessment of proposed technologies and COTS products);
• Review design, interfaces, technical budgets and testing documentation of the processing infrastructure such as Design Documents, Interface Control Documents (ICDs), Testing and Verification documents (e.g. V&V plans, Verification Control
Documents, Testing procedures and test cases, etc.);
• Participate to formal reviews, workshops and technical meetings with Industry as required during the procurement of the EPS-SG processing infrastructure;
• Support interactions with Industry and EUMETSAT teams responsible for integration of the processing infrastructure with the EPS-SG Ground Segment;
• Support definition and consolidation of interfaces between the processing infrastructure and the instrument-specific L1/L2 processing software; In addition, there will be regular involvement in the following tasks requiring interaction and coordination
with other teams at System and Ground Segment level:
• Review of System and Ground Segment documentation dealing with requirements, concepts, algorithms and technical analyses of relevance for data processing;
• Review of documentation dealing with technical evolutions of the EUMETSAT infrastructure;

YOUR PROFILE

In addition to having a University degree (or equivalent, including experience) in the engineering, physics, or software (or similar) domains, you shall have the following mandatory attributes, skills and experience:
Mandatory Attributes, Skills and Experience
1. Relevant experience in preparation of requirements, design, interfaces and testing documentation for data processing systems considering the systems engineering aspects of data processing management and data provision (experience of data processing for high data rate missions and/or Earth Observation missions is an asset but is not mandatory);
2. Relevant experience in monitoring and implementation of designs against requirement baselines and IV&V, including testing and formal acceptance;
3. The ability to maintain a system overview is essential. This ability shall be exercised within a multi-disciplinary context in cooperation with other teams, covering several different data processing levels and instruments;
4. Ability to learn and develop the needed skills and knowledge to contribute to the development of EPS-SG. This includes the ability to rapidly absorb, and make use of, information presented in written and oral communications in a dynamic context;
5. Systematic approach to work, including the ability to plan the work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks;
6. Ability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation.

The working language for the position is English and therefore you must be able to work effectively in this language.

Previous experience and knowledge in any of the following areas will be considered an additional asset.
1. Relevant experience of data processing software and hardware systems performing data ingestion, processing, distribution, monitoring & control and resource management; experience can be in one or more of the specification, design, implementation or
testing phases (experience of more phases is desirable).
2. Experience with Big Data technologies such as: a. Distributed file systems (e.g. Lustre, GPFS, HDFS, etc.); b. NoSQL databases (e.g. MongoDB, Apache Cassandra, Apache HBase, etc.); c. Distributed massaging systems (e.g. ActiveMQ, ZeroMQ,
etc.); d. Distributed data processing frameworks (e.g. Apache Hadoop, Spark, etc.); e. Deployment and configuration of distributed applications (e.g. Apache Zookeeper, Docker, etc.).
3. Experience in Java programming.
4. Experience with high-availability, high-rate, low-latency, data processing systems in the Earth Observation (EO) domain.
